Taliban Claims Responsibility for Killing Medical Team

The Taliban claimed responsibility for killing 10 members of a medical team Thursday in northeastern Afghanistan. The police chief of the Badakhshan province said a group of gunman stopped the team on a road, shot them and took their belongings.

Among the dead were 6 Americans, 2 Afghans, a Briton and a German. Two other Afghans were alive. One of them was released because he was reciting excerpts from the Quran.

The team was a part of the International Assistance Mission, a non-government organization that provides medical care among other things. They were returning to Kabul from the Nuristan province, where they were providing medical services.
