NBC's Tim Russert Dies of Heart Attack at 58

Tim Russert, the famed NBC political correspondent, collapsed and died while at work at NBC's Washington news bureau Friday afternoon.

The apparent cause of death was a heart attack.

Russert, 58, was one of the country's most recognized and respected political journalists, serving as host of "Meet The Press" for 17 years. In its 60th year, “Meet the Press” is the longest-running program in the history of television

Russert, the recipient of 48 honorary doctorates, hosted Tim Russert, a weekly interview program on MSNBC. He was also a frequent correspondent and guest on other NBC News programs, such as The Today Show and Hardball.

Russert, a Buffalo, New York native, graduated from John Carroll University before getting his law degree at Cleveland-Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University.

After Russert graduated from law school, he went on to work for New York Democrat Daniel Patrick Moynihan's 1976 Senatorial campaign, where he served as chief-of-staff. He later became the press secretary for New York Democrat Mario Cuomo's 1982 gubernatorial campaign.

In 1984 Russert was hired by NBC at their Washington Bureau. He became Washington Bureau Chief four years later and became host of "Meet The Press" in 1991. In 2008, Time Magazine named him one of the world's 100 most influential people.

Russert had recently returned to Washington from Boston where he watched his son Luke graduate from Boston College. He married Maureen Orth, a fellow journalist, in 1983.

He is survived by his wife Maureen and his son Luke.
