China Earthquake Could Not Have Been Predicted

China’s devastating 7.9-magnitude earthquake on May 12 likely could not have been predicted, says a leading American seismologist.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey’s top expert on seismic conditions, Walter Mooney, very few earthquakes register with foreshocks that could warn monitors.

Friday’s announcement confirmed reports by Chinese seismologists that there were no pre-monitoring signals prior to last month’s earthquake.

The quake that struck Sichuan province killed 70,000 people and left millions homeless.
