Tim Russert, Host of NBC's "Meet The Press", Dies of Coronary Embolism

Tim Russert, the longtime host of NBC's "Meet The Press", collapsed and died of a heart attack on Friday.

Attempts to revive him failed as he was pronounced dead on site.

Russert, 58, was at the NBC Washington news bureau when he collapsed and died. The preliminary diagnosis of his death was a coronary embolism, which caused the heart attack.

A coronary embolism is an obstruction in a blood vessel in the heart due to a blood clot or other foreign matter that gets stuck while traveling through the bloodstream.

Russert, 58, was one of the country's most recognized and respected political journalists, serving as host of "Meet The Press" for 17 years. In its 60th year, “Meet the Press” is the longest-running program in the history of television.

Russert was hired by NBC at their Washington Bureau in 1984. He became Washington Bureau Chief four years later and became host of "Meet The Press" in 1991. In 2008, Time Magazine named him one of the world's 100 most influential people.

Russert had recently returned to Washington from Boston where he watched his son Luke graduate from Boston College. He married Maureen Orth, a writer for Vanity Fair Magazine, in 1983.

He is survived by his wife Maureen and his son Luke.
