World Sauna Championship Finalist Dies

A finalist competing in the World Sauna Championships in Heinola, Finland died after collapsing during the competition. Vladimir Ladyzhensky was competing against last year’s champion Timo Kaukonen. Both men collapsed in the sauna and were rushed to a nearby hospital where Ladyzhensky later died. Kaukonen remains hospitalized in Lahti.

"All the rules were followed and there was enough first aid personnel. All the competitors needed to sign in to the competition with a doctor's certificate,” says World Sauna chief organizer Ossie Arvel.

Ladyzhensky's death is under investigation.
