Zimbabwe Elections Appear Tenuous as Mugabe Threatens to “Go to War” for Country

Despite a global push for Zimbabwe to conduct a free and fair election when voters place their ballots on June 27 current President Robert Mugabe appears determined to hold his office by any means necessary.

Mugabe is to face Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai in the run-off election but has already said he would never hand the country over to the opposition party calling the MDC traitors and saying his ZANU-PF party would “go to war” for the country.

On Saturday Tsvangirai was arrested for the fifth time in a week after being stopped at a roadblock. He was held for several hours before being released. Tsvangirai has said a free and fair election is nearly impossible with Mugabe and still contends that he had won a large enough majority in the March 29 election to take office.

Mugabe has held office since Zimbabwe won its independence from Britain in 1980.
