Mount Karangetang Erupts in Indonesia, 4 Feared Dead

Mount Karangetang, on Indonesia’s Siau Island, erupted without warning on Friday. Four people are missing and feared dead and five others were injured. About 65 people were evacuated from their villages. Several buildings and a bridge were damaged.

Priyadi Kardono, an official with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, said a warning about the eruption was not issued because there was no indication of increased volcanic activity.

The volcano last erupted in July 2006.
