Charlie Jones, the legendary sports announcer noted for his deep voice and seemingly effortless ability to move from one athletic event to the next, passed away on Thursday after suffering a massive heart attack. Jones was 77.
Over his 38-year career Jones ushered in the American Football League while broadcasting for ABC and then moved to NBC in 1965 where he covered a series of sports and Olympic events until he retired in 1997.
In total Jones made the call in 28 different sports, covering football, golf, figure skating, baseball, tennis and more. Jones carried an enthusiasm for each sport he covered and loved the diversity each offered.
