Earthquake in Japan Kills at least Six, Leaves More than 140 Injured

A powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake rocked a rural region of Japan’s main island of Honshu on Saturday leaving at least six dead and more than 140 injured.

The center of the earthquake was located on Iwate and caused damage to a nuclear power station yet authorities have said there was no danger to the public despite a small spillage.

Iwate is a rural mountainous area and the temblor caused landslides that accounted for the majority of the deaths.

Rescue workers were trying to reach seven people who were buried by a landslide while staying at a hot spring resort in Komamoyu.

The quake has been followed by more than 150 aftershocks.
