Death Toll from Landslides in China Reaches 337, Expected to Climb as More than 1,100 Remain Missing

The death toll from the landslides in northwest China has now hit 337 and officials expect that figure to climb significantly as more than 1,100 people remain missing.

Residents in Zhouqu county, Gansu province, has little chance to escape the flooding as a debris-blocked Bailong River burst its banks Saturday night, sending rocks and mud over hillsides and burying the homes below.

Rescue efforts have been slowed due to the inaccessibility of some areas as roads have been essentially washed away, making it impossible for heavy machinery to pass.
