Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Brandon Morrow was just one inning short of a no-hitter on his way to a career record 17 strikeouts against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.
Rays star Evan Longoria hit a single with two outs in the 9th inning, breaking up what would have been Morrow’s first career no-hitter.
The Blue Jays defeated the Rays, 1-0, completing a three-game sweep. The Rays have now lost five straight games, dropping to second in the AL East division standings behind the New York Yankees.
The Rays came close to being involved in their fourth no-hitter of the season, which would be a record for the modern era. Matt Garza threw the first no-hitter in Rays history against Detroit on July 26, and Tampa Bay was on the short end against Arizona's Edwin Jackson on June 26 and Oakland's Dallas Braden on May 9, when he finished off a perfect game.
This was the fourth blown no-hitter in the 9th inning this season.
