Elian Gonzalez, Child at Center Custody Battle Involving Cuba and U.S., Joins Young Communist Union.

It seems the brief time Cuban-born Elian Gonzalez spent in the U.S. eight years ago wasn’t enough to detract him from pledging allegiance to the Castro cause as reports have indicated the now 14-year-old boy has joined Cuba’s Young Communist Union.

In 1999 Gonzalez was rescued in the Florida Straits after a handmade boat carrying Cubans trying to reach the U.S. wrecked. Gonzalez was just one of a few survivors in an accident that counted his mother among the dead.

Gonzalez had relatives in Miami and upon his arrival they took the 6-year-old in and fought to keep the boy in America. His father, back in Cuba, asked that his son be returned and the custody battle dominated the headlines for some time.

Eventually the U.S. court system stepped in and sided with the father and Elian was returned to Cuba.

On Saturday Gonzalez was one of nearly 18,000 to join the Young Communist Union.
