Nurse Jailed After Aiding Police Officer Awarded $7.7 Million by Jury

Rachelle Jackson has been awarded $7.7 million by a federal jury for false arrest after the Chicago woman spent ten months behind bars for a crime she never committed.

In November 2002 Jackson, a nurse, was walking through her neighborhood when she came across a police car that had been involved in a serious accident. The police officer driving the squad car was unconscious while the second officer had been left in a daze so Jackson helped pull the driver from the vehicle and waited for help.

Soon after the accident police noted that the driver’s firearm had been stolen and accused Jackson of the crime. She was charged and forced to spend ten months behind bars before ever reaching a trial.

When she finally reached trial the judge threw the case out leading Jackson to sue the city of Chicago for false imprisonment.
