The militants who kidnapped a popular TV news anchor and her cameraman have set a Tuesday ransom deadline and have said if the money isn’t paid all negotiations would end.
Ces Drilon, a news anchor for ABS-CBN, along with two cameramen and a University professor were kidnapped on June 8 while in the southern Philippines by a group believed to have close ties with al-Qaeda.
Suspected members of Abu Sayyaf have reportedly contacted Alvarez Isnaji, mayor of Sulu province’s Indanan township, and demanded $450,000 ransom.
One of the cameramen had been released earlier and the ransom deadline is believed to be for Drilon and the second cameraman. ABS-CBN has said the company would not give in to the militants’ demands for ransom.
Isnaji has said he would send an emissary to speak with the abductors.
Abu Sayyaf is considered a terrorist organization and has been linked to several bombings and abductions.
