Rebels in Chad Take Third City as March to Capital Continues

Rebels in Chad have claimed to have seized power in the eastern town of Biltine, their third city over the last few days, and will continue their march towards the capital city of N’Djamena where they hope to overthrow President Idriss Deby.

The rebels began their push towards N’Djamena last week when they claimed the Goz Beida along the Sudanese border. Heavy fighting pushed west and the rebels claimed Am Dam soon after.

There has been no official recognition that Biltine has fallen into rebel hands but government forces have been organized to head off the rebels goal of toppling Deby.

Chadian officials have accused Sudan of backing rebel attacks and has shut down their border and cut economic ties with their neighbor. Sudan has also accused Chad of using rebel forces to launch attacks within their country.
