Demanding better pay public workers in South Africa have taken to the streets in a one-day strike organized by the country’s main union federation, Cosatu.
The government workers have already rejected a 7% increase offered last week, holding out for an 8.6% boost in their pay. More than one million employees were urged to take part in the strike which includes teachers, nurses and prison officers. Doctors and police officers are forbidden by law to strike.
Strikers concentrated in the capital city of Pretoria, marching through the streets with signs and vuvuzelas, calling for a fair wage that will allow them to combat the ever-increasing cost of living.
Much of the anger felt by the striking employees is concentrated on the government’s willingness to shell out large sums of money during last month’s World Cup. Striking employees have argued that the government’s ability to shell out huge amounts of money on tickets and accommodations for ministers is evidence that the funding for wage increases is available.
