The death toll from the landslides in northwest China has now climbed to over 700, more than double the figure reported on Monday and the new number could easily double itself as more than 1,000 people remain missing.
Sparked by intense rains on Saturday the debris-blocked Bailong River in Zhouqu county, Gansu province, burst its banks sending a rushing wave of water, mud and rocks down the hillsides and directly into homes and buildings.
The force of the mud easily toppled the strongest structures, burying residents who had little chance of escape. Efforts to locate and rescue those still missing have been slowed due to the destruction of roads, making it impossible to transport the heavy machinery necessary to remove debris.
