UN Official to Head Talks as Zimbabwe Presidential Election Draws Closer

With less than two weeks before Zimbabwe holds its presidential run-off between Zanu-PF leader and current President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai of the Movement for Democratic Change party the United Nations has sent a top official to speak with politicians about the growing violence that has plagued the election process.

Haile Menkerios is scheduled to spend five days speaking with politicians about the June 27 election and the political situation in Zimbabwe.

Mugabe has been accused of using government forces to intimidate voters and run-off opposition supporters as a means of holding his seat. Tsvangirai has been detained by police five times over the past week and his campaign has been interrupted by police and military forces.

Mugabe has gone on record to say he would never allow the opposition party to take control of Zimbabwe and that those war veterans who fought for independence would stand by him to prevent such an occurrence.

Zimbabwe has been at the top of International headlines since the March 29 election ended with Tsvangirai winning the election but he did not receive enough votes to avoid the run-off.
