The Yankees may be starting to play the best baseball of the season but the reward has come with a catch. In Sunday's blow out of the Astros, the Yankees suffered a big blow to their ballclub with sinkerball ace Wang getting hurt while running the bases.
Reports say that it was just a sprain ankle and Wang will be returning to New York for an MRI on it. Wang who has been as solid as any starter in the league since joining the Yankees will be missed for the time he is out. The Yankees have played well lately and have climbed above the .500 mark but their starting pitching has not really been the reason.
The offense has finally started to click and have outslugged other teams for victories. Mike Mussina has really had a bounced back year and is proving that he still has something left in the tank after many question why the Yankees brought him back. Pettitte has not been what the Yankees thought they would get out of him and he will be counted on more now that Wang is out.
The Yankees may be playing well but the question is how long it will last. The pitching has got to step up and start to carry their weight if the Yankees have any chance of catching the Sox in the division. This year the Yankees will have more of a challenge than ever in the division with all teams playing .500 ball or better. This year, they have to worry about another team other than the Sox, in the Tampa Rays.
