At least 3 people were killed and 16 injured Monday when an
SUV and a van collided on U.S. Hwy 395 in southern California. Of the dead, two
were passengers in the SUV and the third was in the van.
The van was carrying members of the cross country team of
California Baptist University. They were on their way to a high-altitude
training camp in Mammoth Lakes. The driver, identified as the school’s cheer leading coach Wendy Rice, was killed. The twelve passengers were injured,
one of them critically.
The SUV, carrying five passengers, was traveling
southbound when the driver lost control. The vehicle rolled over the divider
and into northbound traffic. It struck the front of the van and burst into
flames. A Subaru carrying one person then hit the SUV.
The three surviving passengers in the SUV suffered trauma
and third degree burns. The Subaru’s driver suffered a small area of third
degree burns.
The crash happened about 5 miles south of Bishop at
around 8:30 p.m.
