A source tells CNN that former Senator Ted Stevens, 86,
died in a plane crash Monday in Alaska. The private plane was carrying 9
passengers, including former NASA administrator Sean O’Keefe, when it went down
near Dillingham.
A spokesman for
the Alaska Air National Guard said at least 3 people survived with injuries and
others may be alive. O’Keefe’s condition is unknown.
EADS North America confirmed O’Keefe, their CEO, was on
board the aircraft. Stevens’ family has refused to comment on reports he was on
the plane.
Stevens, also known as Uncle Ted, served more time in the
Senate than any other Republican. He was convicted of making false statements
on financial disclosers in October 2008 and subsequently lost a bid for
re-election. A federal judge later dismissed the conviction citing misconduct
of the prosecutor.
