John McCain Proposes Lifting Ban on Offshore Drilling

As a method to reduce American’s dependence on foreign oil Republican presidential candidate John McCain has proposed lifting the ban on offshore drilling and allowing individual states to decide if they wanted to explore possibilities.

In excerpts from a speech that is to be delivered on Tuesday in Houston, Texas McCain is expected to state, “We have proven oil reserves of at least 21 billion barrels in the United States. But a broad federal moratorium stands in the way of energy exploration and production. And I believe it is time for the federal government to lift these restrictions and to put our own reserves to use.”

McCain reasoned that many Americans “do not have the luxury of waiting on the far-off plans of futurists and politicians.”

While the idea of offshore drilling has become increasingly popular among Americans paying more than four dollars at the pump many coastal states remain opposed to the prospect due to fears of spills that could ruin beaches. Joining the push against offshore drilling are environmentalists who believe offshore drilling damages the world’s oceans.

Despite McCain’s proposal to introduce the option of offshore drilling he remains opposed to the idea of drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
