President Robert Mugabe warned opponents Monday that he is prepared to hold on to power by any means necessary, saying the outcome of a presidential runoff election on June 27 amounted to using a ball point pen to fight against a gun.
Mugabe vowed to fight to keep the pro-Western Movement for Democratic Change from taking control of the government. Mugabe faces MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai in a presidential runoff June 27.
Despite a call for a free and fair election, Mugabe has used his position in power to hinder the campaign efforts of the opposition leader. Tsvangirai’s supporters have been targeted and arrested, and campaign buses have been impounded. Police have detained Tsvangirai at least six times since campaigning began for the runoff.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and U.S. President George W. Bush have called for international election monitors to oversee the runoff elections, saying Mugabe’s criminal regime threatens to make a mockery of the election process.
