Japan Hangs Three Convicted Killers

Three convicted killers were hanged in Japan Tuesday, according to the country’s minister of justice. The executions reflect Japan’s staunchly-held belief in the death penalty, and serves as a reassurance to a public still outraged by last week’s fatal stabbing rampage in Tokyo.

Justice Minister Kunio Hatoyama said he called for the executions because the cases of the three killers involved acts of indescribable cruelty. “We are pursuing executions in order to achieve justice and firmly protect the rule of law,” he said.

Amnesty International protested the hangings and pleaded for Japan to abolish the death penalty. Japan’s Prime Minister Yaksuo Fukuda responded there was no need for change, citing the country’s wide-spread support for capital punishment was a deterrent to crime.
