Israel and Hamas Agree to Peace Deal

Israel and Hamas have reportedly agreed to a ceasefire that could end the bitter violence that has plagued Gaza over the past several months. The ceasefire is set to take effect on Thursday.

As part of the ceasefire Israel has agreed to relax its blockade along the Gaza Strip as Hamas takes the steps to release an Israeli soldier being held hostage.

Hamas, a Palestinian Islamist movement, has said militants would abide by the ceasefire.

Gaza has been controlled by Hamas for more than a year now and since that time Israel has set up an economic blockade along the border that has directly affected the Palestinian population. As part of the border easing commercial goods will eventually be allowed to pass between the two sides.

Israel’s decision to approve the ceasefire was made by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Ehud Barak following Barak’s meetings in Egypt.
