President George Bush Calls for Congress to End Offshore Drilling Ban

In response to the rising price of gas and the continued dependence on foreign oil President George Bush called on Congress to end a 27-year-ban on offshore drilling in U.S. waters.

The ban has restricted drilling along the west and east coasts as well as the eastern Gulf of Mexico. That territory accounts for 80 percent of the U.S.’s Outer Continental Shelf.

While Bush has called for the offshore drilling ban to be lifted there are several Democrat and Republican representatives in coastal states who have expressed a desire to keep the moratorium in place. Many of these representatives believe offshore drilling would hut tourism and could lead to potentially dangerous spills.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain has recently come out in support of allowing individual states to determine offshore drilling operations. Speaking in Houston on Tuesday McCain addressed the need for America to break from its energy dependency on other countries and pointed out the safety measures that are now in place that would protect against any major spillage from drilling operations off the coast.

McCain pointed to Hurricane Katrina and Rita and the devastation they caused along the Gulf Coast yet the drilling operations in the Gulf sustained only minor damage.
