Morocco closes down hundreds of mosques
After an accident in February, Moroccan authorities must be more cautious, they say.
Morocco is closing down about 6.5% of mosques in the country after a minaret collapsed in February and killed 41 people during Friday prayer.
The country has nearly 48,000 mosques and so far the authorities have inspected almost 20,000. While 6.5% of the mosques are being completely shut down, at least 416 (2.2%) are being at least partially closed off.
Tents will be provided for the members of the mosques to pray in until improvements are made to the buildings.
It is said that about $325 million is set aside for the demolition and rebuilding of these mosques.
