China Investigates Claims Milk Powder Made Babies Grow Breasts

China has launched an investigation in to claims that baby formula caused infant girls in Hubei province to grow breasts.  The Health Ministry is testing samples of the formula, which is made by Synutra International.

Xinhua news agency reports as least three infant girls have grown breasts prematurely. An official at Wuhan Children’s Hospital claims three of the four infants treated for premature sexual development have never eaten Synutra baby formula.

Synutra CEO Liang Zhang defended the company in a statement Monday. “We do not add hormones to our products and we have invested heavily in research, quality control, formulations and ingredients,” Zhang said in a statement.

New Zealand based Fonterra supplies milk powder to Synutra. In a statement Wednesday, Fonterra said they are “100 percent confident about the quality of its products.”
