South African President Thabo Mbeki Meeting with Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe

For the third time in as many months South African President Thabo Mbeki is in Zimbabwe to speak with President Robert Mugabe.

Mbeki is expected to address the growing concerns over violence leading up to next week’s presidential run-off pitting Mugabe and Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai.

Mugabe has said he would never hand over power to the MDC regardless of the outcome. Tsvangirai has accused Mugabe of using military forces to intimidate voters and launch violent attacks against opposition supporters.

Mbeki has spent more than three months trying to mediate the situation since the original vote took place March 29. In that vote Tsvangirai collected more votes than Mugabe yet not enough to avoid the run-off.

Since that election Mugabe has tightened his reign over the country and has shown no sign of vacating the position he has held since Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980.

The international community has called for free and fair elections in Zimbabwe yet Tsvangirai has consistently been apprehended by police, his staff workers have been jailed and his supporters have been targeted by Mugabe’s ruling ZANU-PF party.

It is still unclear whether election observers will be present in Zimbabwe when the June 27 run-off election is held.
