Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" Goes Platinum, Tops Billboard In Debut Week

Lil Wayne and his new album "Tha Carter III" sit atop the Billboard Hot 100 on Wednesday, selling just over one million copies in its opening week.

Lil Wayne becomes the first hip-hop artist since 50 Cent in 2005 to go platinum in its opening week, according to SoundScan reports on Wednesday. The last album to top that milestone was 50 Cent's "The Massacre" in March 2005.

No album in 2006 sold as many as 800,000 copies in a single week. The largest sales week since "The Massacre" belonged to Kanye West's "Graduation," which garnered 957,000 copies in its opening week last year when it was released on Sept. 11.

Lil Wayne's previous biggest sales week was a 238,000-unit start for "Tha Carter II" in 2005. "Tha Carter 3" becomes his fourth album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.

Plies' "Definition of Real" sold 215,000 to debut at No. 2, the same position his 2007 album "The Real Testament" achieved.

The "Now 28" compilation dropped one spot from No. 2 to No. 3 with 132,000 copies. Disturbed's "Indestructible" falls from No. 1 to No. 4 to 102,000 copies. Usher's "Here I Stand" dropped from No. 3 to No. 5 with 101,000 copies.
