GAO Upholds Boeing Protest Over $35 Billion Tanker Contract

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) upheld a protest by Boeing on Wednesday over a $35 billion tanker contract by the Air Force.

The $35 billion tanker contract was one of the richest contracts in Pentagon history.

The GAO found the Air Force made "a number of significant errors that could have affected the outcome of what was a close competition between" Boeing and Northrop Grumman Corp., who was paired with EADS.

The Air Force "conducted misleading and unequal discussions with Boeing," telling Boeing that it met the qualifications of a performance criteria, but later recanting that Boeing had only partially met the objective, according to the GAO report.

On February 29, the Air Force selected the team of Northrop Grumman Corp and EADS to build 179 midair refuelers over the next 15 years to replace its aging KC-135 tankers.

Soon thereafter, Boeing launched a protest to dispute the Air Force's decision.
