Barack Obama Forgoes Public Financing for Presidential Campaign

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has said he will not accept public financing for his campaign, electing instead to raise money through private financing.

Obama’s decision to forgo the more than $80 million in financing will likely result in an even larger pool of financing from private support. The Illinois senator has already shattered fundraising records during his bid to earn the Democratic nomination.

Obama and Republican presidential candidate John McCain had agreed to run their campaigns with public funding but Obama’s decision to opt out was made because, according to his campaign team, McCain was already using private financing.

Once a candidate accepts public funding they are no longer allowed to accept private financing.
