Juneteenth Celebrations Nationwide Begin Thursday, June 19

Juneteenth celebrations will begin in Texas and several states throughout the nation on Thursday, June 19.

The Juneteenth holiday commemorates the arrival of Major Gen. Gordon Granger in Galveston, Texas on June 19th, 1865 with news that the Civil War was over and Texas slaves were free.

Two years after the Emancipation Proclamation and two months after the Civil War ended, approximately 250,000 slaves in Texas were unaware of either, still working and living without freedom.

The day, which later became known as Juneteenth, has been a celebration for African-Americans ever since. According to the Web site juneteenth.com, Juneteenth celebrations are scheduled in most if not all states. Although it is a celebration for many, it is a sign of the end of the greatest injustice in American history.
