South Koreans Continue Protests over US Beef Imports

South Koreans continue to protest over a decision by newly-elected President Lee Myung-bak to lift a five-year-old ban on imports of U.S. beef.

The ban, imposed in 2003 following one incident of mad-cow disease in the United States, was lifted in April. Since then, anti-government demonstrations in South Korea have hampered Lee’s efforts to stimulate his country’s economy.

Despite public outcries for a renegotiation of the beef deal, Lee has refused citing possible trade frictions that could strain diplomatic relations with Washington.

Lee’s entire Cabinet and top civil servants offered to resign from their posts following a huge demonstration last week in which 80,000 marched in protest of the U.S. beef deal.

Since then, South Korean negotiators have been in last-ditch talks with U.S. trade representatives to win assurances that only beef from cattle younger than 30 months would be shipped to South Korea. Beef from older cattle is thought to be at greater risk of infection from mad-cow disease.
