Italian Court Upholds Life Sentences for Members Naples Mafia Clan

An Italian appeals court upheld life sentences handed down to 16 members of the Naples mafia, the Camorra, on Thursday.

In 2005 the 16 men, belonging to the infamous Casalesi clan, were handed life sentences for their role in violent clashes with other clans that left dozens dead. That first trial lasted seven years and resulted in 21 life sentences and on Thursday 16 of those life sentences were confirmed as their appeals were denied.

Among those whose life sentence remained intact was clan leader Francesco Schiavone, known by many as Sandokan.
