Israel, Hamas Cease-Fire Brings Quiet to Gaza Strip

A six-month cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas took effect at 6 am Thursday morning, bringing a tentative quiet to the Gaza Strip.

Skeptics questioned whether the peace agreement would hold, but hours into the truce, there were no reports of gunfire.

If the peace holds for three days, Israel has agreed to ease its blockade to allow relief into Gaza. Further concession will be made the following Sunday if the cease-fire holds, with Israel opening up additional cargo crossings to allow vital supplies into Gaza.

Hours before the cease-fire began, rocket and mortar raged Wednesday in a battle that left one Hamas militant dead. Gazan citizens hoped that final battle would be the “storm before the calm.”

Hamas military leaders declared themselves completely committed to the truce, which extends to all militant groups operating in Gaza.
