An Australian couple has been charged with murder and torture in the starvation deaths of their 18-month-old twins, who had been dead more than a week before their decomposing bodies were discovered by their 11-year old sister.
The 30-year old mother initially told authorities the twins died because she had not fed them enough. The 28-year old father denied any involvement in their deaths, saying he was not responsible for their care and had not seen them since Christmas.
Prosecutors initially charged the parents with neglect, but upgraded the charges Thursday during the couple’s court appearance. The murder and torture charges carry potential life sentences.
The twins, a boy and a girl, each weighed as much as a newborn baby. The mother told prosecutors she discovered them dead on Sunday or Monday of last week, but did nothing. Police were called to the middle-class suburban home after the bodies were found by a sibling.
Neighbors told police they had no idea the family had young toddlers. The couple’s surviving children, ages 3, 4, 5 and 11, are said to be traumatized and are now in the custody of their grandmother.
