Shell Shuts Down Nigerian Oil Field after Attack by Militants

An oil installation off the southern coast of Nigeria was raided Thursday, forcing oil-giant Shell to shut down production in the oil-rich Gulf of Guinea.

The attack by armed militants with the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) on an oil platform located about 85-miles from the African coast succeeded in reducing oil production by 10 percent.

MEND is a highly-organized group that has been involved since 2006 in the illegal tapping of pipelines and wells, resulting in more than 20 percent reductions in output. Those reductions have helped to send global oil prices to an all-time high.

The United States depends heavily on Nigeria’s easily refined crude oil, and has offered to provide a military presence in the Gulf of Guinea to deter the militants. U.S. naval vessels have been dispatched on training missions to the area, known as Africa’s offshore oil heartland.
