Yahoo Inc. (NYSE: YHOO) announced Thursday that it is tripling its e-mail database, adding "@ymail.com" and "@rocketmail.com" to its e-mail addresses.
The additions of "@ymail.com" and "@rocketmail.com" are indications that Yahoo is moving into a more profitable direction from their recent troubles.
Yahoo Mail is the most popular web-based email in the world with approximately 266 million users, according to industry statistics.
Ymail is geared toward adults who currently have Yahoo email accounts that are more jovial and colloquial. Ymail accounts give adults the ability to have Yahoo email addresses, but to have addresses that are more professional, possibility including their full names as opposed to names like "SexyGirl15" or "XxOoGuyXxOo".
Yahoo expects users to readily recognize "ymail" because it is used for a version of the email customized for mobile devices. Ironically, the name is very similar to rival Google's email account entitled "Gmail".
Rocketmail is a resurrected email address that belonged to a company Yahoo bought in 1997.
Yahoo recently ended talks with Microsoft, who placed a bid to buy the Internet conglomerate for nearly $50 billion.
Billionaire investor Carl Icahn then purchased four percent of Yahoo's stock and is leading a campaign to oust all 10 members of Yahoo's board at an annual shareholders meeting set for August 1. Icahn accused Yahoo directors of purposely sabotaging the Microsoft deal.
