MDC May Pull Out of Zimbabwe Election
With the presidential election run-off in
Tsvangirai is scheduled to meet current President Robert Mugabe at the polls on June 27 but since the original election on March 29 violence tied to the Movement for Democratic Change campaign has escalated. In that first election Tsvangirai captured more votes than Mugabe yet not enough to avoid the run-off.
The MDC has said there has been no evidence that the June election would be free and fair, noting that at least 70 of their supporters have been killed and thousands have been intimidated by military forces who back Mugabe.
A withdrawal from the run-off election may draw further attention from the international community and put pressure to conduct the election in a free and fair manner.
An announcement from the MDC is expected on Monday about their plans concerning the race.
