EU Lifts Sanctions on Cuba

The European Union voted Thursday to lift economic sanctions against Cuba, drawing criticism from the United States.

While the move is largely symbolic as sanctions have been suspended since 2005, the EU indicated recent reforms by Cuban President Raul Castro warranted the measure.

The U.S. State Department responded to the announcement, saying the recent reforms in Cuba were merely ‘cosmetic,’ and did little to change the oppressive regime founded by former president Fidel Castro.

In defending its decision, the EU conceded that there would be a review of the decision within a year as there was still much the Cuban government had left to do.

Sanctions imposed by the United States more than 50 years ago remain in place.
