Myanmar Funding Needed, According to UN

The United Nations says Myanmar is in urgent need of funding for relief efforts following the devastating cyclone that struck May 2.

Unless the international community can quickly provide additional funding, the helicopters that have been delivering life-saving aid to the devastated Irrawaddy delta will be grounded.

The U.N.’s World Food Program issued an appeal for $50 million to fund its logistical operation, of which the helicopters are the most expensive to run. The use of trucks and boats will also grind to halt by the end of this month unless additional funding is received.

In a separate appeal Friday, European Union leaders asked Myanmar’s ruling military junta to drop restrictions on international aid agencies seeking to help victim’s of Cyclone Nargis.
