China Releases More Than 1,000 People Arrested During Tibetan Unrest

China has released more than 1,000 people who had been convicted of minor offences during the violent outbreaks in Tibet earlier this year.

China has felt the pressure from the international community regarding the individuals arrested during the unrest that began in March.

The riots in Tibet were widely publicized but accounts of the violence differ between Chinese officials and Tibetan residents. According to the Chinese government 19 rioters were killed during the violence while Tibetans have placed the number at dozens before Chinese forces established control.

With the Olympic torch set to pass through the Tibetan capital of Lhasa tomorrow Chinese authorities made the move in hopes it would keep protests down. Chinese security forces have maintained a presence in Lhasa and will be patrolling the area while the Olympic torch relay passes through.
