Cambodia Destroys 33 Tons of Oil Used to Produce Ecstasy

Authorities in Cambodia, working with Australian police, seized and destroyed a 33-ton stockpile of safrole-rich oil, a key ingredient used in the production of Ecstasy.

The oil had the potential to produce 245 million tablets of Ecstasy. Extracted from the roots of the sassafras tree, the oil had a potential street value of $7.3 billion.

Law enforcement officers with the Australian Federal Police reported the oil was burned over a three-day period starting Wednesday in a remote village near Phnom Penh.

Cambodia’s crackdown on illegal drug production has the added benefit of curtailing the destruction of the sassafras tree, which has to be cut down to produce safrole oil. Officials have been working to preserve the sassafras tree, a rare species found in the Cardamom Mountains.
