Nigeria Orders Increased Security for Oil Field

Nigeria’s President Umaru Yar’Adua called for an increase in security around oil fields in the southern Niger Delta region following an attack Thursday by armed militants on an off-shore facility.

According to a statement released Friday, the president declared his government would take “all necessary action” against those responsible for the attack.

Members of the militant group Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Shell oil installation, which normally produces about 200,000 barrels of crude per day, remained shut down Friday.
