Greenpeace Activists Arrested in Japan for Stealing Whale Meat

Two Greenpeace activists were arrested in Japan Friday after police said they stole about 50 pounds of whale meat from a government-sponsored whaling program.

The activists acknowledged they took a container of whale meat, but indicated the meat had later been returned. Lawyers for Greenpeace say the pair resorted to the alleged theft in order to get evidence the whalers were involved in embezzlement.

Whalers operating under a government-sponsored program sanctioned by international rules kill about 1,000 whales a year. Greenpeace contends the program is a cover for commercial hunting, which was banned for major species in 1986.
