U.N. Official Warns Any Attack on Iran Could Ignite “Ball of Fire”

U.N. nuclear watchdog chief Mohamed ElBaradei has warned that any attack launched against Iran could ignite a “ball of fire” in the Mideast and lead to the country becoming more active in its quest to develop nuclear weapons.

ElBaradei revealed his forecast during an interview on Al Arabiya TV on Saturday as he was addressing the recent military exercises Israel has taken in preparation for a possible attack on Iran.

Iran has condemned Israel’s military actions and commented that the moves jeopardize “global peace and security."

Israel has stated they were hoping for a diplomatic solution to the issue of Iran and its nuclear power but according to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert they have not ruled out a strike as a means of defense. Iran has insisted their nuclear program is for peaceful purposes yet they have ignored U.N. calls for them to halt their uranium enrichment programs.

A United States intelligence report released last year concluded that Iran had suspended its nuclear arms program but Israel has maintained that the country has continued its pursuit of nuclear weapons.
