Northern California Wildfire Nearly Contained, Evacuation Orders Remain in Place

A wildfire near Watsonville in Northern California is said to be nearly 90 percent contained yet evacuation orders remain in place for several thousand resident, many of whom have already fled their homes.

A six-mile stretch of Highway 1 was closed as the blaze destroyed several homes and buildings while charring about 630 acres of land in Santa Cruz County.

Fire officials believe they could have the wildfire under containment by the end of Saturday. More than 650 firefighters have been working on the inferno since it caused began threatening residents on Friday.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
