Morgan Tsvangirai Pulls Out of Election, Mugabe to Run Unopposed in Zimbabwe

Morgan Tsvangirai has said he is pulling out of the upcoming Zimbabwe presidential run-off, saying there was no point as current president Robert Mugabe would continue to prevent free and fair elections.

Tsvangirai made his announcement after party supporters of his Movement for Democratic Change party came under attack while heading to a rally in Harare on Sunday.

The opposition leader was quoted as saying there was no reason to remain in the June 27 run-off when “the outcome is determined by... Mugabe himself.”

During his press conference in Zimbabwe’s capital Tsvangirai stated “We in the MDC cannot ask them to cast their vote on 27 June, when that vote could cost them their lives.”

Mugabe has accused the MDC of spreading lies about the violence that has dominated the election, saying the opposition party was responsible for the attacks and the only reason Tsvangirai has pulled out of the election was because he was facing “humiliation and defeat.”

Sunday was supposed to be the last major rally for Tsvangirai’s MDC party but when supporters began to arrive at the venue they were met by Mugabe’s ZANU-PF supporters who attacked the opposition.

Mugabe has said he would never allow the opposition party to take control of Zimbabwe and that as God was the one that put him in power only God could remove him. He has held the presidency since 1980 when Zimbabwe gained its independence from the British.
