Lightning Strikes Spark Several Hundred Wildfires in Northern California

Just as fire crews were in the process of containing a large wildfire in Santa Cruz County in Northern California they were hit with news that several hundred more fires had been ignited after lightning strikes touched off nearly 400 blazes in the area.

The largest of the fires has already consumed 4.7 square miles and continues to threaten homes and buildings through Napa County and into Solano County.

Many of the fires ignited on Saturday occurred in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest just north of Sacramento as severe lightning storms touched off the dry timber.

Northern California now has wildfires from Monterey County all the way up to the state’s border with Oregon.
